The term "Super Tuscan" has been in use since the early 70's. Producers such as Antinori and Tenuta San Guido released the notable wines Tignanello and Sassicaia in an effort to erase the damage being done to Italian winemaking with poorly made straw basket chianti. The only thing those bottles were good for was holding candlesticks after being emptied. Using modern techniques and facilities winemakers started producing world class wines even though, at the time, thet could only be classified as Vino di Tavola or Table Wine. Tenuta San Guido had been growing cabernet sauvignon and experimenting with Bordeaux style blends since the 40's. Their sharing of the previous unreleased vintages and success would influence Alceo di Napoli to produce his own cabernet based wine that debuted in the early 80's. Sammarco was born. Though not as well known as the big names, this is a wine that rivals all. The winery also was one of the first to go fully organic and biodynamic, further pushing the level of quality forward. They decided to produce the family's pinnacle wine, what is now known as Vigna d'Alceo, in 1990. Unfortunately, Alceo was unable to taste the bottling as he passed away during that vintage.
